Microsoft Surface Companion (Surface Mini) by nik255 Microsoft Surface Companion (Surface Mini) by nik255
This is a concept I made for a further Microsoft Surface tablet: It is the Surface Companion also known as Surface Mini. The Surface Companion is made on the Nvidia Tegra 4 chipset, 4 GB RAM and has a 7.9″ IPS LCD display with 1536 x 2048 pixels (324 ppi). As well as the other Surface tablets Surface Companion is crafted from the molten magnesium alloy VaporMg.
It has 2 x Full-size USB 3.0 connectors, Mini DisplayPort Video, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, LTE 4G, NFC, A-GPS + Glonass. It also houses a 44 W-h replaceable battery and it is equipped with front- and rear-facing LifeCam with 1080p HD. The device comes with 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of internal memory. Additionally it has a MicroSDXC slot for optional memory expansion.
Moreover the device comes with the magnetic digital ink stylus (which attaches to the top of the tablet) so that you can write on it. Windows is able to detect the proximity of the pen and intelligently stops taking touch input.

You can see another Surface Mini concept with Intel Atom (x86) and Windows 8.1 Pro here:…

I would be very grateful if one or the other could give a feedback. If you like my concept, share it ;) Thanks in advance :)

I love how the Surface RT design just works so perfectly at that size! I also appreciate how you considered the VaporMg casing, as many people (sadly including the people who design tablets to sell) go for cheap plastic like on the Nexus 7 when designing a mini tablet.

And the name is perfect! Give it LTE and voice and I'll even give up my Lumia 820 for it!

Looks awesome. Only problem with vertical is the keyboard not acting very well as a cover...

But your design looks very sleek and cool! After writing on the Surface Pro I can't take any other tablet with writing options seriously. They all seem like a joke after I tried handwriting on the Surface Pro. Really hope to see them make the pen a standard part of the Surface in any future models because they really nailed it.

This looks awesome and all, but you kind of missed the point with the keyboard cover. its useless in that orientation and you might as well use a usb keyboard or dock. That and windows 8 apps are best suited for landscape view, not portrait. But I like the vertical design a lot, and it makes it look real nice.

8.1 is making portrait view a standard feature so it can be used on mini tablets. See Paul Thurott's review of the coming changes!

I think you missed what i was saying. as a keyboard dock, that looks cool. But try folding the cover like that. Real world application, the "cover" part would be useless. Thats why i said it would be better as a dock if it snapped in in portrait mode, not landscape.

However, i do like the standardizing of portrait for apps. Thats cool.

Nah, I just had nothing to say about the touch cover. I was just replying regarding what you said about landscape mode.

Ah. Yah. My bad.

However, the apps that already work in portrait do better in landscape on my Win8 tab, but thats due to its size (11.6 inches). An 8 inch tablet would do well with portrait apps.

Something I'm looking forward to trying on my RT. I'd hope that Skype gains a portrait mode, because I only use it for chat, and I'd love to hold the Surface like a giant cellphone :D

the surface costs $270 to make, they sell it for $500 minimum. the touch cover costs $16 for them to make. They sell it for $100. They don't sell a lot, but they make a lot. Also this is way better than the Surface, although the 4 gb RAM is too much for an RT machine.

It looks much nicer in that vertically oriented design, well done. Good to see that you keep updating it with the new tegra 4 processor.
